Every eye care exam at Atlantis Eyecare includes a test for glaucoma. Glaucoma refers to several conditions that affect the optic nerve. If pressure builds within the eye, this nerve can become injured, causing vision problems including blindness.
Since glaucoma has no detectable symptoms in the early phases, routine eye exams are very important. Early detection is the first line of defense against optic nerve damage. If you have not had a glaucoma test recently you need to look no further to receive the most thorough test you can find from glaucoma treatment Torrance center Atlantis Eyecare.
Types of glaucoma
Open angle glaucoma – develops from inadequate flow of fluid in the eye. Blocked flow causes pressure to build within the eye, potentially damaging the optic nerve.
Normal tension glaucoma – diagnosed by loss of peripheral vision as well as size and cupping of the optic nerve. Internal eye pressure is normal.
Congenital glaucoma – occurs very rarely.
Angle closure glaucoma – fluid blocked by the iris affecting the front of the eye. Symptoms are tearing, blurry vision, nausea and pain.
Secondary glaucoma – develops as a result of another medical condition such as diabetes or eye inflammation.
Risk factors for development of glaucoma include:
- Diabetes
- Farsightedness
- Nearsightedness
- Ethnicity
- Age over 60
Glaucoma treatment options
While each patient will receive a combination of treatments depending on the type of glaucoma, the main glaucoma treatment Torrance offers is:
Oral medication which decreases internal eye pressure Creating drainage allowing fluid to escape lowering internal pressure
Glaucoma requires expert treatment
Arranging a consultation concerning glaucoma is the first step in the treatment process. At Atlantis Eyecare, glaucoma patients are closely monitored until the glaucoma has stabilized. Once that occurs, patients are seen every 3 to 4 months to check the condition and to detect any changes.
Glaucoma is more prevalent in people over 60 years of age, and certain types of glaucoma are more prevalent in Asian and African American, and Hispanic populations. Screening for glaucoma is a simple process, routinely done during our comprehensive eye exams. If you suspect you may have glaucoma, or simply wish the peace of mind that come with an ‘all clear’ test result, contact the eye care specialists at Atlantis Eyecare Torrance to set up your appointment.
