Ever since LASIK was approved by the FDA in 1998 it has transformed the world of vision correction. The procedure provides permanent vision correction on an outpatient basis, helping millions of people see clearly without full dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
LASIK surgery is a procedure which reshapes the cornea using a highly focused beam of light. The cornea is the clear covering on the front of the eye - the window of the eye. When it is not perfectly shaped, light does not focus properly on the retina, creating vision deficiencies. At Atlantis Eyecare, Orange County LASIK surgeons have performed over 30,000 laser correction procedures. They have perfected the procedure during decades of experience giving our patients among the best LASIK surgery Torrance residents could hope to receive
After LASIK, Atlantis Eyecare patients can focus at any distance. Reading, driving and working on a computer can be done without depending on glasses. Additionally there have been improvements in the field of LASIX, allowing more patients access to this revolutionary treatment. What does LASIK correct?
Conventional LASIK can correct what are called lower order aberrations; nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Recent advances in LASIK technology can now also correct higher order aberrations. These are manifested by seeing halos, starbursts, and glare, particularly at night.
While LASIK does not claim to be able to restore 20/20 vision to all patients, it can markedly improve vision and in some cases, can improve over 20/20 vision. The goal of LASIX is to remove or reduce the patient’s dependence on corrective lenses.
Is LASIK worth it?
People who are dependent on contacts, glasses (or both) sometime wonder if the result is worth the time and expense. At Atlantis Eyecare, our Torrance patients report an excellent satisfaction level with the procedure for two reasons.
First, eliminating the need to keep track of and clean eyeglasses is very much appreciated. Those who formerly wore contact lenses are delighted to be free of the ritual of inserting and treating contact lenses.
Second and most important, glasses and contacts are not as clear as the natural lens which is protected from dust and contaminants behind the cornea. Glasses interfere with peripheral vision and contacts can be very irritating to wear, particularly in dusty conditions.
Following LASIK, patients report their quality of vision is clear, sharp and a drastic improvement over wearing their artificial lenses and that it is very definitely ‘worth it’.
The LASIK Procedure
There are just a few quick steps in a LASIK surgery. This pain-free procedure is done in minutes for both eyes, restoring 20/20 vision in many cases.
After the patient is comfortable and the eyes have been numbed with special anesthetic drops the surgeon creates a thin flap of tissue in the cornea. The flap is folded out of the way allowing access to the corneal tissue.
The laser then removes microscopic amounts of tissue, reshaping the cornea according to the precise measurements taken at the pre-operative exam. The flap is then replaced and is sealed with a special solution after which it heals very quickly.
After surgery, patients will rest for a short time and then can be driven home. Patients will need to come in for a check-up the day after surgery, but this usually is a very quick appointment.
Patients can usually return to work the next day. Patients who work in dusty environments may need to wait a few days so the eyes are fully healed before returning to work. Patients must refrain from heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for a few days as well.
LASIK allows almost immediate vision correction…
Many patients report they have clear sharp vision almost immediately. Patients may experience some blurring on the day of surgery and possibly the next day. Vision will continue to improve until the eyes have fully healed, usually in one week.
